Blending the Old and the New: Exploring the Intersection of Traditional Rong Hua Craft and ContemporaryJewelry Making

Rong Hua, a traditional handicraft, embodies Chinese traditional culture and skills. In order to better protect, inherit and develop the traditional handicraft of the velvet flower in the new era, it is necessary not only to preserve the authentic of the ancient technique but also to innovate and develop based on modern aesthetics. Traditional crafts also need to keep up with the times and innovate.

I choose to combine the innovative aspects of materials with contemporary jewelry. Starting from the material, I use metal wires to improve the service life of velvet flowers and simultaneously reflect the craft value of velvet flowers in the production method. I followed the production steps of velvet flowers, using metal wire instead of silk thread.

By doing so, It made me understand that it is impossible to completely follow the method of making velvet flowers, and I also need to make changes according to the characteristics of the metal material. So I tried not to cut off the metal wire but to shape it into different shapes. I can see many other design possibilities from these samples, and the metal will shake slightly due to its tension, bringing movement to work. In the future, I will further explore different designs.
